Twitter API Pricing: Yet Another Monetizing Tactic of Musk

Twitter API Pricing

A series of tweets from Twitter Developers’ official accounts have brought the microblogging site- Twitter into the limelight once again. The official account of Twitter Developers which serves as the voice of the team and is the source of the latest updates, news, and events related to the Twitter API, last night came up with some important updates related to the Twitter API Pricing.

In their first tweet, the team said, “Twitter data are among the world’s most powerful data sets. We’re committed to enabling fast & comprehensive access so you can continue to build with us. We’ll be back with more details on what you can expect next week.”

This tweet is a clear indication that Twitter.Inc has some concrete plans to implement, about which more will be disclosed expectedly by next week. And the specific words “committed to enabling fast & comprehensive access” are indicating yet another change in the core policy of Twitter, which is on its way and soon will be made public.

The next tweet from the team goes like “Over the years, hundreds of millions of people have sent over a trillion Tweets, with billions more every week.” And if you try to read in-between the lines it clearly shows that Twitter.Inc is trying to put facts and figures in front of you to show how important Twitter has become for people and how many people are engaging with it each day. Well, what does it mean? What purpose does it serve?

If I have to tell you, this shows how powerful Twitter data can be for surveys and research. It is even claimed by them in the first tweet itself that “Twitter data are among the world’s most powerful data sets.”

And the final tweet on the same day by Twitter Developer makes it pretty clear why all these set-a-stage statements are made. The final tweet states that “Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1. A paid basic tier will be available instead.”

And it doesn’t come as a complete surprise as earlier on Jan 17, a tweet from the same account pointed out this change by saying, “Twitter is enforcing its long-standing API rules. That may result in some apps not working.” As said so is done, from 9 Feb Twitter API will not be free but you have to buy the paid service. And the Twitter API pricing is yet to be disclosed and most probably by next week all of us have the Twitter API pricing list with us.

This change will obviously have some impacts as many of the developers depend on the free Twitter API- Application Programming Interface to develop new features and third-party applications.

Many of which may stop working if they didn’t find the paid service price reasonable. The most serious impact of it has to be bear by the Researchers who rely on Twitter data for studies of human behavior and people’s consensus. But nothing certain can be said as of now as it all depends on the Twitter API pricing that will most probably be disclosed by the end of this week.
