As a next-gen-only title available on PlayStation 5, Remnant 2 offers players three different modes for performance on both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. The quality mode enhances visuals while capping the frame rate at 30fps, the performance mode delivers at least 60fps uncapped, and the balanced mode maintains a steady 60fps while delivering high-quality visuals. Personally, I prefer the balanced mode as it provides a smooth 60fps experience with only minor frame rate drops during boss fights.
3. No Crossplay Feature
One disheartening aspect of Remnant 2 is the absence of crossplay at launch. In an era where crossplay has become a defining feature in many games, allowing players to enjoy the game together across different platforms, its omission feels like a missed opportunity. Crossplay is particularly important in Remnant 2, as the core gameplay heavily revolves around cooperative play.
Although the lack of crossplay doesn’t completely deter me from playing, it is puzzling given that its predecessor already features crossplay functionality between PC and Xbox. As a result, this decision is quite disappointing for players looking forward to a seamless multiplayer experience.
4. The Narrative Falls Short of The Gameplay
While the gameplay in Remnant 2 shines brightly, the same cannot be said for the campaign mode. The ultimate objective is to fight back and protect what remains of humanity. However, the campaign falls short in comparison to the captivating gameplay.
Though there are some likable characters, such as weapons master Riggs and the alien-like inhabitant Dwell, the actual narrative struggles to compete with the gameplay. Key story elements and insights into the world are primarily delivered through lore books scattered around or lengthy dialogue segments. These prolonged dialogues can make the game feel more like a visual novel than an action-packed RPG.
While lore and world-building are important, having some of the narratives presented through well-crafted cutscenes would have been a more effective choice, especially for players seeking a compelling story intertwined with gripping action.
5. Upgraded Class System Introduced
Remnant 2 introduces an upgraded class system known as Archetypes, elevating the gameplay experience from its predecessor. After completing the tutorial, players can choose from four distinct classes: Medic, Handler, Challenger, and Hunter, with Gunslinger also available for preorders. The Archetype system has been significantly improved, offering diverse gameplay styles for each class, with no option considered inferior.
Each Archetype features a unique perk known as the prime perk, which defines the standout characteristic of the class. For instance, the Handler’s dog companion can revive downed players or allies. The decision of which Archetype to choose primarily depends on players’ preferred playstyle.
