Santa Claus has a history of literally hundreds of years and all those stories had a huge impact in making all the Christmas traditions. He’s the old man that brings gifts for good kids and coal for the bad ones. Santa Claus is said to travel the lands with its 12 reindeer. His elves help him in creating all the gifts for the good kids.

The legend of Santa Claus started with an actual saint whose name was Saint Nicholas born in 280 A.D. in Patara. In modern-day Turkey, St. Nicolas was born near Myra. The saint was extremely popular for his kindness and deeds of compassion. From helping kids to giving all his wealth to the poor, Saint Nicholas was truly great. He was even known as the protector of children and sailors.

St. Nicholas once saved three girls from prostitution by giving them money for their dowry, so that they can get married. This is only one of the most popular stories of St. Nicholas, I am sure there are a lot of them.

The feast day of St. Nicholas is celebrated on 6 Dec, the day of his death anniversary. The day is considered very holy to get married and make big purchases. Even after the Protestant Reformation, it was St. Nicholas whose respect was maintained. As not many saints were appreciated during that time, only St. Nicholas was the one who got popular because of his deeds, especially in Holland.

How Did Saint Nicholas Became Santa Claus?

The resemblance is quite evident in the pronunciation of Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus. The derivation of Saint Nicholas in Dutch has named the old-beardo Santa Claus. So it began from Saint Nicholas, the saint was called Sint Nicholas in Dutch. After Sint Nicholas, the name shifted to Sinter Klaas, which is a Dutch nickname for the saint. And at last from Sinter Klaas, the name evolved to Santa Claus when translated to English.

Besides Dutch and English, I am sure a lot of other spoken languages would have affected the name “Santa Claus”. Also, it took centuries to shift from Saint Nicolas to Santa Claus while adding a whole other fictional character, a red costume, elves, reindeer, and other things to the name.

How To Reply When Your Kid Asks ‘Is Santa Real?’

Many psychologists have closely observed the psychology behind a child’s mind when s/he asks “Is Santa Real?”. They say most of the time when your kid asks you this, his/her brain is already developed enough to understand that Santa is all fiction. But, when you reply to them that yes, Santa is real, they deny their feelings and try to believe the myth.

However, you should play with the kids’ minds when s/he asks you “Is Santa real?”. Ask them politely why do they think so. Particularly which incident or story led them to question the existence of Santa Claus. Their answer will tell you if your kid is capable enough to understand that Santa is not real. It is only inspired by the good deeds of Saint Nicholas.

Wrapping Up

Santa is not real. There’s no old guy with a big beard who lives on the North Pole with his elves and rides the reindeer every 25th December just to give some gifts to good kids. There’s no Santa Claus. The stories have only been inspired by the great human St. Nicholas, whose acts of kindness have forced humans to create a fictional character on him.
