Doug Jones outraises, outspends Tommy Tuberville in third quarter

U.S. Sen. Doug Jones may face difficulties getting re-elected. But money won’t be one of them.

The incumbent Democrat raised $10.4 million between July 1 and Sept. 30, according to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Thursday. Jones spent $11.3 million and finished the quarter with $7.9 million on hand.

Former Auburn head football coach Tommy Tuberville, the Republican nominee, reported raising $3.3 million and spending $2.1 million. He finished the quarter with $1.7 million on hand.

The reports do not reflect outside spending done for or against the candidates. Jones has been targeted in television ads by outside groups, including the Club for Growth. The FEC said the conservative group, which also targeted Republicans in the July 14 runoffs in Alabama, spent $1.6 million against Jones between Jan. 1, 2019, and the end of July.
