#18 Friars Split Weekend Series With #8 UMass After Shootout Loss | ABC6

For the second-consecutive night, the No. 18 Providence College men’s hockey team went to a shootout against No. 8 UMass, with the Minutemen claiming the extra point by virtue of Zac Jones’ goal in the fifth round of the shootout.

NOTES
-The teams skated through the first 20 minutes scoreless. This marked the fourth consecutive scoreless period for the teams on their weekend series.

-Patrick Moynihan broke up the scoring dry spell halfway through the second period, putting the Friars ahead 1-0. On his second goal of the season, Moynihan’s shot deflected off of two Minutemen before finding its way to the back of the net. Brett Berard earned the assist on the play.

-UMass’ Josh Lopina responded three minutes later with a goal on the power play. Assisted by Aaron Bohlinger and Garrett Wait, Lopina’s goal evened things up and the teams headed into the second intermission tied 1-1.

-The Friars ended the final period the same way they started it, tied 1-1, leading them into the second OT of the series. UMass finished regulation with an edge in shots 28-20.

-Overtime remained scoreless for both teams, despite the Friars carrying the play with multiple golden chances to end it. Lindberg stopped all six shots he faced in the overtime session.

-UMass’ Zac Jones scored in the shootout, giving the Minutemen the extra point in the Hockey East standings.

– Jaxson Stauber stopped 27 out of 28 shots faced in net improving his goals-against average to 1.80 and save percentage to .926 through 12 games this season.
