DDC elections have been held for the first time to establish a three-tier Panchayati Raj system in the state. Members have been elected in 278 seats in the elections held in 280 seats. The newly elected members will be administered oath at the district level or simultaneously in the coming days. This will be followed by election for the most important president and vice president positions in the District Development Council.
In this election, 14 elected members at the district level will vote in the election of president and vice president. Apart from 33 per cent women, the government is discussing at various levels about reservation for Scheduled Castes and Tribes as president. In such a situation, the internal politics going on at the party level for the posts of President and Vice President of the District Development Council has been affected. Only after the reservation rules are made public will the parties be able to decide who to appoint as president in their majority districts at the district level.
Women will be given 33 percent reservation for the post of president in the District Development Council. How many posts will be reserved for SC and ST are also being discussed. Reservation rules are in early stages. This process may take several days to complete. -Sital Nanda, Administrative Secretary Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department
