In Jammu and Kashmir, out of a total of twenty districts, women will become the President of the District Development Council in seven districts. The state government has decided to give 33 percent reservation for women to the post of important chairman of the District Development Council. In which districts will the post of president be reserved for women. It will be known only after the finalization of reservation rules.
DDC elections have been held for the first time to establish a three-tier Panchayati Raj system in the state. Members have been elected in 278 seats in the elections held in 280 seats. The newly elected members will be administered oath at the district level or simultaneously in the coming days. This will be followed by election for the most important president and vice president positions in the District Development Council.
In this election, 14 elected members at the district level will vote in the election of president and vice president. Apart from 33 per cent women, the government is discussing at various levels about reservation for Scheduled Castes and Tribes as president. In such a situation, the internal politics going on at the party level for the posts of President and Vice President of the District Development Council has been affected. Only after the reservation rules are made public will the parties be able to decide who to appoint as president in their majority districts at the district level.
