Pride month is celebrated in June because of Stonewall Uprising in 1969. This incident was the primary key to the Gay Liberation Movement and many consider it a catalyst of the revolution.

In those times (around the late 60s), government and society, both used to oppress gay people. On June 28, 1969, NYC police raided a gay bar, The Stonewall Inn. in NYC’s West Village. However, it wasn’t any regular raid. People were sick of this daily torture and this time, the patrons gave a fight back.

Hundreds of people participated in the Stonewall protests and the whole incident lasted for six days. Violent clashes and riots were all over Christopher Street. After exactly one year, on 28 June 1970, thousands marched all the way from Stonewall Inn to Central Park. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first-ever Pride Parade.

Since 1970, every year thousands of people, celebrities, and influencers march the same way on June 28, marking June a Pride Month.

The Stonewall Uprising is the primary reason why Pride month is celebrated in June.
