Not only is the process of making uggs savage but if we humans had even a pinch of humanity we would never attempt to make money from an animals’ skin. But what are uggs made of?

The making of uggs is highly practiced in Australia. In fact, most of the Ugg boots are shipped from Australia only. Let’s disclose the complete process below on ‘What are Uggs made of?’ and ‘how are they made?’.

How are Uggs Made? Entire Process From The Scratch

There are many big brands that have patented the word ‘UGG’ in their brand name. Controversy followed even when a brand named itself UGG and other companies rose with the opinion that it is a common word and cannot be patented. Although a lot of shopping apps sell Ugg boots, there is still a lot of scope for eco-friendly ugg boots.

According to UGG, their process of making Ugg boots is eco-friendly. But we choose to differ on logical explanations. Here is the complete process of ‘How are Uggs Made?’-

1. Preparing The Sheep For Wool

Sheep are fed well because the fat and healthier the skin, the better the product. The most common sheep used for making Uggs are Merinos. They are raised to have the perfect wrinkly skin which brings more wool from every animal.

2. Fleshing

After skinning the sheep live, the wool-skin is sent for cleansing. It is put in saltwater for hours. If there are still some residues left after cleansing, then the fleshing is done in a machine. This ensures the required standard of wool is maintained.

3. Scouring

In Scouring, dirt and grease are refined from the wool by putting it in high temperatures with many liquids. The compounds used are alcohol sulfates, alcohol ethereal sulfonates, linear benzene sulfonated, and alkali.

4. Pickling

After scouring the wool, it is stored in salt and acids for 16 hours. The salt prevents the skin from swelling that can happen because of acidic components in the solution.

5. Tanning

Now the next step leads to protecting the sheepskin from rotting. The wool is kept with chromium salts and bicarbonate. These salts are used to regulate the pH levels and chromium minimizes the degeneration of wool.

6. Dyeing

Dyeing is done to improve the color of the wool and make it look more wearable. But the dye is not applied directly. It is mixed with emulsified oil and fat-liquor to have a nice look and gain elasticity. After its application, the wool is dried in air dryers. Then it is cleaned with perchloroethylene for removing dirt, grease, or any substance that was left before.

This step takes from 4 to 32 hours.

7. Sole

If you have ever used Uggs then you might already know Uggs use eco-friendly soles. (This also happened after the natural rubber was over-exhausted). So, the eco-friendly soles are made by using Ethylene-vinyl acetate. This specific compound makes the soles mushy and comfortable.

EVA also makes the sole last longer than the regular rubber sole, making it a good choice.

8. Binding & Stitching

This is the last step of the making of Uggs. It involves designing the perfect pair of boots for various foot sizes for men and women. Many layers of cotton are added and after verification from experts, the Ugg boots are sent to the markets.

It is not quite difficult to say if you know the answer to ‘What are Uggs made of?’ The process can include some eco-friendly ways but the killing of sheep can not be ignored in the first place. Yes, you heard that right. A lot of sheep are killed while the heartless workers skin them alive.

Approx 3 million lambs are killed every spring just so humans can wear fancy boots. The most barbaric thing about all of this situation is that this cruelty is considered normal in the Australian wool industry. Not only is using an animal’s skin wrong, but it is bad for the environment too.

The wool required for making Uggs needs to have both the skin and hair of sleep together, which pollutes the water supply and its residues degrade the land.

Now you not only know the answer to ‘does Ugg harm animals’, but also to ‘how does ugg harm animals?’
