UK coronavirus cases up nearly 17,000 in 24 hours, as deaths increase by 67

The UK has recorded 16,982 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to new government data  — an increase from the 16,717 announced the previous day.

The number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test was 67, down from 150 the previous day. 

The announcement comes after it was confirmed yesterday that there have now been 58,500 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 w as mentioned on the death certificate.

It comes as new measures to stem the spread of the virus come into effect in regions across the country.

In London, parts of Essex and York, the weekend has seen a new range of restrictions and guidelines be introduced after the introduction of tier 2 lockdown measures. The change in rules, which come with guidance to avoid unnecessary use of public transport, rule out household mixing indoors.
