SAGE expert warns of ‘tough Xmas’ but vaccine is ‘light at end of tunnel’

A SCIENTIFIC expert on the Government’s SAGE board has warned Xmas will be ‘tough’ – but said a vaccine in the Spring will offer hope.

Jeremy Farrar, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said coronavirus will be a huge obstacle this holkiday season.

He said: “Christmas will be tough this year. I don’t think it’s going to be the usual celebration it is and all families coming together, I’m afraid”

But Sir Jeremy said there is “light at the end of the tunnel” and a jab could be rolled out in just a few months.

He said: “I do believe the vaccines will be available in the first quarter of next year. I do believe that monoclonal antibodies to treat patients and save lives will be available in the coming month.”

It comes as coronavirus deaths in the UK jumped by 150 on the deadliest day since June 3, and the third highest rise since the pandemic began.
