A 31 year old Newton man has been given two simultaneous 5-year prison terms for stealing a welder and other various tools from two locations in August and September of last year. Thomas Eugene Eckert has also been given two 1-thousand 25-dollar fines by District Court Judge Randy Hefner. Eckert plead guilty to two counts of 3rd Degree burglary. In both instances, authorities say video from trail cameras led authorities to Eckert. Around 8a.m. on August 28th last year, prosecutors say he stole various tools from a pole building on North 39th Avenue East, just north of Newton. On September 5th, around 6p.m., authorities say Eckert went into another ag building on North 51st Avenue East…northeast of Newton…and stole a welder and other items. An accomplice in that theft, who reportedly helped Eckert load the stolen property into the back of a pick-up, was given a suspended 5 year prison term along with 3 years of probation and a 750-dollar fine. 49 Year old Melody Lynn Phillips of Newton also plead guilty to 3rd Degree Burglary.
