Let’s be honest:
No one likes wasting their time cleaning the house!
Especially when you can use this precious time to do something you really enjoy, like spending some quality time with your friends and family.
Unfortunately, keeping a house clean and shiny is vital for your wellbeing.
But who says you can’t get a little help?
And by ‘help’ I mean a robot vacuum cleaner that does all the dirty work for you!
Sounds good, right?
Great, because I’m going to show you how you can use smart home devices to make your life easier, so pay attention.
What Is A Robot Vacuum Cleaner?
Robot vacuum cleaners are autonomous robots that can be programmed (via your smartphone) to hoover your floors.
They usually come with various brushes which allow them to clean every type of floor without leaving any marks.
So don’t worry about your precious flooring, it’s totally safe.
Their intelligent system helps them detect walls and furniture. This feature helps them avoid getting stuck around your house.
They are often pretty small, which means that they can clean hard-to-access areas.
In other words, they can sneak under your bed, table, sofa and other furniture for deeper cleaning.
Plus, their battery allows them a good few hours of life. Some robots even know when it’s time for them to recharge and go back to their charging station automatically.
Pretty cool, right?
But the best thing about these robots is that they don’t need you!
You can program your robot vacuum cleaner, leave your house, and when you come back, your floor will be spotless.
Before you rush and buy the first robot vacuum cleaner you see online, let me give you some tips to help you choose the right one.
Things To Consider When Buying A Robot Vacuum Cleaner
When it comes to buying a robot vacuum cleaner, you need to be careful.
You have thousands of options on the market making it challenging to find the one for you.
So, here is a list of the things you should pay attention to when picking your robot:
The first thing you’ll notice is the design.
Of course, you can pick the color you prefer, but there are two other things you need to watch out for:
- The size
- The shape
Why is size important?
Well, because if your robot is too big, it won’t get under your furniture and might often get stuck.
So the smaller, the better.
Now, let’s speak about shape.
It’s not a coincidence that a circular shape is the most common.
It’s just the best shape for the robot. With this shape, it’s pretty much impossible for it to get stuck in the corners.
Suction power is one of the most important factors to take into consideration, especially if you have pets.
Let’s face it.
Pet hair is usually a nightmare to get rid of.
It digs itself into carpets, making it really hard to get out.
That’s why you need a robot vacuum cleaner that can offer you high-suction power when you need it.
It’s always good to know the size of the bin. It gives you a rough estimation of how often you’ll need to empty it.
And, you know what?
Some new robots have a self-emptying feature.
That means when their bin is full, they find their way back to the emptying station, empty their bin and go straight back to work!
Knowing the run time is essential if:
- You have big surfaces to clean.
- You need your home cleaning quickly.
The shorter your battery life is, the longer it takes the robot to complete its job.
It’ll need to take some breaks to charge its battery backup. So, ideally, you want a robot that has a great battery life.
This is an essential factor to consider, especially if you have allergies.
Well, because a good filter can considerably improve the air quality of your home.
The best filters for vacuum cleaners are HEPA filters.
So, if you want high-quality filtration, you should go for a vacuum cleaner that provides these filters.
Smart mapping is an interesting feature. It allows the robot to map each room of your house to ensure every inch gets cleaned.
If you plan to use your robot vacuum cleaner while sleeping or working from home, you want it as quiet as possible.
Last but not least: brushes.
You need to find a robot vacuum cleaner that offers the best brushes for your floors.
For example, delicate floors such as wooden flooring need softer brushes than tile floors.
So you might want to do some research on the topic to find the brushes that are the best fit for your floors.
Top Brands Compared
Now that you know what to look for when buying a robot vacuum cleaner, let me introduce you to my two favorite brands.
Shark is one of the best brands out there. They offer a wide range of robot vacuum cleaners to fit all needs and budgets.
What’s good about this brand?
The Size: All their robots are relatively small (compared to the competition), making them perfect for cleaning hard-to-access-area without getting stuck.
The Filter: All their robots provide HEPA filters which are the best filters on the market.
Smart Mapping: This new technology is available on a few Shark’s robot vacuum cleaners.
Overall, it’s a great feature that improves cleaning performance, but it can be pretty costly.
This is why Shark offer both options: with and without.
Bin Capacity: Shark offers a pretty good size of bin- up to 0.5L.
Some models also offer the self-emptying capacity, which means that the robot will empty its bin by itself before to go back to work.
Having this feature means that you don’t need a huge bin. Usually, 0.2L is enough.
What are the weaknesses of Shark?
The Noise: The noise is the main weakness of Shark’s robots. They are about 70dB which is a bit louder than the competition.
The Running Time: Beside their battery in Lithium ION, they can run ‘only’ 60 minutes.
The Charging Time: The charging time’s average is about 3 hours for a robot vacuum cleaner. However, Shark sells models that need up to 4 hours to charge completely.
Another great brand on the market is Roomba.
And let me tell you why…
The Run Time: Besides offering the same battery as Shark’s: Lithium ION, Roomba’s robots have autonomy of 90minutes, which is 30minutes more than the competition.
Charge Time: Roomba offers quick-to-charge robots. Their models need about 3 hours on their charging basis before they can get back to work.
The Noise Level: The Roomba robots are one of the quietest robots you can find out there: only 68dB. You can program them to clean while sleeping or work without being disturbed.
Smart Mapping: Like Shark, Roomba offers the smart mapping capacity on a few models.
Filter: Another thing Roomba has in common with Shark is their filters. Roomba also includes HEPA filters in all its models.
But, what is the weakness of Roomba’s robots?
Well, they have one major issue:
The Bin Capacity: Just a bit smaller than Shark’s: 0.4L. To be honest, this is pretty average.
The only thing we can blame Roomba for is that they don’t offer self-emptying, which is, unfortunately, one of the most popular features of a robot vacuum cleaner.
