Know All About The Instagram Friend Map Feature Here!

If you use Snapchat, to be more particular, if you’re familiar with the Snap Map feature of the platform, you already know what to expect from the Instagram Friend Map feature. Because both platforms’ map features work similarly, they allow you to see your friends’ locations in real-time.

According to Instagram, the Instagram Friend Map feature is an internal prototype and hasn’t been released externally yet. The feature was first noticed by Allessandro Paluzzi, a reverse engineer who is often the first to discover new features of social media platforms before they are officially released to the broader public.

Now, coming back to the feature, just because it is there on the platform doesn’t mean that everyone you’re connected with will know exactly where you are at all times. According to Paluzzi, the Instagram Friend Map feature will allow users to choose who can see their location.

Your location, just like your chats, will be end-to-end encrypted. You will have the option to choose with whom you want to share your location with. For example, you can share it with followers who follow you back, your “Close Friends,” or nobody if you’re uncomfortable with the feature. Furthermore, the Instagram Friend Map feature also comes with a “Ghost Mode” setting that can be used to hide one’s last live location.

The Friend Map feature will also allow users to leave short messages or “Notes” on the map that people connected with them can see. As of now, Instagram Notes appear at the top of your DM section, but if and when the Friends Map feature is launched, these short updates could also be shared on the map. This way, you can let your friends know where you are and why you’re there.

For example, if you go to a new restaurant, then along with your location, you can leave a note to let your friends know anything you might want to say.

With the Friend Map feature launch, Instagram would also be introducing something eerily similar to Apple’s “Find My” feature. This feature lets users see where their friends and family are located in real-time.

So, why is Instagram releasing all these features so similar to other platforms and services? It is being done to ensure that users stay on the app longer and depend on it more than other platforms.
