Grealish injury update ahead of Newcastle
Jack Grealish will miss Aston Villa’s next Premier League match against Newcastle as he continues his recovery from a lower leg injury.
The 25-year-old has been “making really good progress” according to Dean Smith, with Villa’s head coach revealing his captain has been struck down with illness this week.
“Jack’s been making really good progress but, unfortunately, he won’t make Newcastle,” Smith confirmed, knowing Grealish will miss his fifth match on the spin after first pulling up in training on February 18.
“He has been ill this week so he’s been off for a couple of days as well, but we’re hopeful for the Tottenham game now, that’s for sure.”
Villa handed ‘massive’ boost
Grealish remains out for Villa against Newcastle – but Smith has confirmed Matty Cash will return to the squad to face Steve Bruce’s side.
“Matty is back to full training,” said Smith. “He’s travelling with us to Newcastle. He’s available for selection.”
Cash, like Grealish, has missed the last four Premier League matches after he picked up a hamstring injury in the second half of the goalless draw against Brighton on February 13.
Villa have won only once while the pair have been sidelined, beating Leeds United 1-0 while losing to Leicester City and Sheffield United and drawing against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Lawrenson makes interesting Newcastle comment
BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson thinks Newcastle might concentrate on stifling Villa rather than go for the win when the two sides meet on Friday night at St James’ Park.
Steve Bruce’s Newcastle are under serious threat of being relegated with just a point separating them from Fulham in 18th place.
The Magpies are in 16th with Brighton and Hove Albion on 26 points with Fulham.
Newcastle earned a crucial point against fellow strugglers West Bromwich Albion last time out but they have to play Villa and Brighton before the international break, two massive fixtures for Bruce’s men in the battle against relegation.
Villa told why Barkley will want to complete move
Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley will want a permanent deal to join Villa this summer because of the “fantastic” way they have looked after him.
That’s according to former Nottingham Forest striker Marlon Harewood who says the former Everton star will be eager to repay boss Smith.
Transfer talk surrounding the former Everton ace continues to rumble on with Villa tipped to make a move for Barkley this summer with an exit from Chelsea seemingly on the cards.
And Harewood, who was talking to Football Fancast, believes Villa will be his preferred destination.
