Driver suffered life-changing injuries as cars raced, judge decides

Two men were racing when one of their cars smashed into a furniture store, leaving one with life-changing injuries, a judge has decided.

Jordan Powers, 27, was badly hurt when his Volkswagen Scirocco careered into a DFS showroom on the A5 at Cannock on May 24, 2019.

The driver, of Victor Street, Pelsall, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at a hearing in September 2020.

The other motorist involved, Mark Cole, 57, of Banbury Road, Cannock, initially pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving but changed his plea at a hearing on February 5, 2021.

Now a judge in a hearing called at Stafford Crown Court to decide the facts of the case has decided the pair were racing.

Judge Jonathan Gosling took part in the so-called Newton hearing after Cole disputed the evidence put forward by the prosecution about his driving yesterday, Wednesday, March 10.

Judge Gosling also decided that both men did not know each other, despite working for the same company.

Sentencing was set for April 21.
