Villagers and regional public representatives have started a sit-in strike at the PWD office demanding development work on the Pendula-Maikhandi motorway of development block Kirtinagar. Villagers allege that since 2008, the department has not been able to complete the construction of the said motorway, forcing the villagers to travel an additional distance of 24 km.
On Monday, the angry villagers who reached the PWD office headed by Meenakshi Devi, the head of Gram Panchayat Maikhandi, shouted slogans against the department and the regional MLA. After this he sat on an indefinite strike. On this occasion, former District Panchayat member Mahipal Butola said that construction work started on the said motorway in the year 2008. During this period, a 10-km motorway was constructed from the Pendula band to Makhandi on behalf of the department. Also, the last part of the motorway was also linked with the Maletha Tehri motorway, but about a quarter to two km of the route has been left. Due to this, the regional public has to travel an extra 24 km to reach the district headquarters and elsewhere. The villagers and public representatives sitting on the dharna said that the gradual dharna would be continued till the department gave a written assurance to start the construction work on the motorway. On this occasion Zilla Panchayat member Sangeeta Jayada, pandula head Sunay Kukashal, Pradhan Kanoli Rashmi Devi, KPP member Punita Devi, Uttam Singh Pundir, Raghuveer Singh Butola, Dhiraj Singh, Ram Singh, Bhagwati Prasad, Vikram Singh, Shurveer Singh, Karan Singh , Dharma Singh etc. were present.
