COVID-19 vaccine recipient in Japan dies but connection uncertain

A woman in her 60s who received the coronavirus vaccine has died, the health ministry said Tuesday. The woman received a Pfizer Inc. vaccine on Friday and died Monday.

The cause of death is believed to be subarachnoid hemorrhage, and the causal relationship with the vaccine is indeterminable, the ministry said.

It is the first report of a death after coronavirus vaccination in the country.

She is not reported to have had underlying conditions.

There are no reports in other countries of a link between the Pfizer vaccine and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Japan began coronavirus vaccinations on Feb. 17, starting with medical workers.
