A group of volunteers in Rochester have been partnering weekly with local restaurants to provide the homeless with warm meals. Every Wednesday, behind the United Methodist Church in Rochester, the community has been coming together to care for the homeless. From boots to groceries and a warm meal from a local restaurant, the initiative Manna Meals for the Hungry has been helping those less fortunate. Cheryl Huckins put together the initiative when the pandemic began. Each week she partners with a rotating list of Rochester restaurants that those in the community can call to buy meals for the homeless, ranging from $5 to $7. Then, she picks up the meals and brings them to the church. “I’m very grateful for the Rochester people,” Huckins said. “I cannot believe the love that’s in this community and we work by the grace of God and we’re doing this work here on Earth.”This week, Mitchell Hill BBQ was able to provide 55 “Manna Meals” for those in need.“We try to pick meals that are going to be very filling, especially on these cold evenings,” co-owner Robert Benoit said. “So, we did a smoked meatloaf that we do, mashed potatoes and corn.”The restaurant opened just before the start of the pandemic, and they take part in Manna Meals once a month to give back in these tough times. Next Wednesday, Manna Meals will provide meals once again, with help from the community.
