Chris Sutton praises Aston Villa’s ‘upgrade’ as he hails recruitment

Former Aston Villa striker Chris Sutton has hailed the arrival of Ollie Watkins and believes the in-form striker is a “really smart piece of business”.

Watkins has been outstanding since arriving from Brentford in the summer for a club-record fee of £28m and has gone onto become a key figure for Dean Smith’s side this season.

He has scored eight goals in 18 appearances which has helped Villa into the upper echelons of the Premier League table winning plenty of rave reviews in the process.

And Sutton has joined the long list  of Watkins’ admirers with the former Premier League title-winner insisting he has been a bit of shrewd recrutiment.

“I think he’s an upgrade on the strikers that were there last season,” said Sutton

“I think he’s a really good all-round striker. He had a couple of headers, didn’t he?! [against Manchester United]. I think he should have scored that.

“But I think that’s a really smart piece of business. I think Dean Smith has done a brilliant job – I think he will score goals.”

Sutton’s former strike partner Alan Shearer has also been full of praise for Watkins having hailed his performance against Crystal Palace and believes the goals will soon return.

He said: “He was magnificent, he gave the back line of Crystal Palace a torrid time, with his energy, with his pace running in behind. It was constant one-v-one, they couldn’t handle him.
