SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — New Hanover County Schools is reporting about a quarter of the number of Covid-19 cases it was seeing this time last month.
In the first week of March, the school district confirmed 27 cases across all campuses and 21 precautionary quarantines. A month ago, on Feb. 5, the school system reported 100 cases.
The last time the school district’s Covid-19 numbers were in the 20s was the half-week before Thanksgiving. The drop in cases comes just in time for the elementary school’s full-time reopening. On Monday, more than 9,500 student will be back on a normal, in-person schedule for the first time since March 2020.

Port City Daily obtains data for its weekly updates through NHCS public online reporting. The system shows cases that parents and students self-reported to the schools.
Some unreported positive tests may go unaccounted for. Additionally, cases disclosed Friday afternoon or through the weekend may not be reported until the following Friday.
NHCS has reported 778 positive cases total since Oct. 12, the day students returned to physical classrooms.

Brunswick County Schools
Brunswick County Schools is reporting 17 active Covid-19 cases and 154 precautionary quarantines as of Friday.
According to BCS, its data is collected from the Brunswick County Health Department. Only positive cases that were at BCS locations prior to testing positive are included in the report.
To date, BCS has recorded 385 positive cases among its students and staff. Of those 368 are recovered.

Pender County Schools
Pender County Schools’ most recent Covid-19 update is from the week of Feb. 22-28. As of then, the school district had 14 known, active Covid-19 cases.
90 people were quarantining after being exposed to the virus.
At least 487 staff and students in PCS have tested positive to date. Of those, 473 are recovered.
On Monday of this week, PCS announced the Heide Trask football was pausing practice to quarantine 39 people for Covid-19 exposure. Two games were rescheduled.
“While it’s certainly disappointing to pause the season after just one game, we know that the safety and the health of our players and staff is the top priority,” Heide Trask interim athletic director Ed Gilroy said in a press release. “We will continue to monitor the situation and work with our school nurses to make sure all safety protocols are followed.”
Port City Daily receives PCS’ data through its weekly district reporting. The online dashboard updates on Mondays with any positive cases the school is aware of. According to a PCS spokesperson, the district obtains data through self-reporting, as well as the Pender County Health Department.
