Bruce Describes ‘Strange And Unique’ Situation With Magpie’s Injury – The Newcastle United Blog

Ciaran Clark made his first Premier League start in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea yesterday. The 31-year-old had been out of action since being withdrawn at halftime in the 7-1 win at Morecambe in the EFL Cup.

As luck would have it, just as one defender gets back to full fitness, another suffers an injury, or two. Jamaal Lascelles was pulled at halftime yesterday with two separate knocks.

The Chronicle has published the following comments from Steve Bruce about why his captain didn’t come out for the second half:

“Unfortunately he wanted to have a go with his knee, he hurt it.

“The reason he came off is not his knee, when he went to run out he felt his thigh.

“It’s a strange and unique situation.

“We don’t know how bad it is until we see him on Monday.”

Lascelles received treatment after seemingly injuring his knee when he made an excellent stop on Timo Werner in the box. However, Lascelles was able to soldier on until halftime.

It was at that time that he felt a problem with his thigh and was replaced by Fabian Schar. We’ll find out more tomorrow after he presumably undergoes a scan on his thigh.

Jamaal’s injuries don’t sound like they’re going to be too bad. However, it is getting perilously close to the heavy holiday schedule where there are 7 matches over two-and-a-half weeks entering the New Year.

After last season’s debacle, where Florian Lejeune was forced to start 4 matches over 12 days after returning from his knee injury, we need as many players fit as possible.
