Aston Villa defender Matt Targett’s fantastic form has put him in the sights of England boss Gareth Southgate who could hand him a call-up this month.
The Mirror is reporting that Southgate has been impressed by his performances in Villa’s back four which has seen him develop a fantastic understanding with Jack Grealish on the left-hand side.
The next England squad is due to be named on March 18 and Targett, should he be handed the chance to join the Three Lions squad, will look to take his club form onto the international stage.
The 25-year-old has been ever-present for Villa in their 25 Premier League games this season and has been part of a defence which has kept 13 clean sheets in the process.
Targett does have England honours at under-19s, under-20s and under-21s level and is now looking good to make it to the senior squad who face World Cup qualifiers later this month against San Marino, Albania and Poland.
Southgate has watched Villa in person for their games against Leicester and Leeds.
After Villa disposed of Leeds at the weekend, boss Dean Smith was full of praise for Targett and said: “Matt’s having a fantastic season – his consistency has been great.
“He’s getting better all of the time. He’s been one of our stand-out players this season.”
The Mirror say that a senior England call-up for Targett would enhance his chances of a new Villa contract after signing from Southampton in 2019 for £15m
Villa have already handed new deals to Grealish, Tyrone Mings and John McGinn and Ezri Konsa and Targett are expected to follow.

News of a potential England call-up follows that of a surprise call for goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
Capped seven times by Argentina’s youth teams, Martinez is yet to make a senior appearance for his country despite being called up to training camps with Lionel Scaloni’s setup.
But that did not stop talkSPORT presenters Ray Parlour, Alan Brazil and Trevor Sinclair posing the question, though.
“He’s one of the signings of the summer, certainly,” Arsenal legend Parlour said on the radio station.
Villa have an excellent goalkeeper. He has kept them in games when he has been up against it.
“He’s been sensational. He had that spell at Arsenal right at the end when Leno got injured against Brighton and he’s proved that he is a top-class goalkeeper.
“Leno is an excellent goalkeeper as well but I am really pleased with Martinez because he is a really good guy and I was amazed that he was at Arsenal for ten years.
“Now he’s got his chance and he’s certainly enjoying his football.”
Brazil interrupted Parlour to ask: “If he’s been at Arsenal for ten years, then I suppose he is eligible – I am not saying he will – to play for England?”
