Arsenal are being linked with a surprise move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton – but they have been advised to look elsewhere.
The Gunners want to bring in new backup to No.1 Bernd Leno this month after selling Emiliano Martinez to Villa in the summer.
While Martinez has shone at Villa Park – keeping more clean sheets than any other Premier League goalkeeper this season – the stopper Arsenal signed shortly after his departure, Iceland international Alex Runarsson, has struggled making several errors.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed he plans to reinforce the position and the Daily Mail claim Heaton could be an option.
Heaton has been on the bench for Villa in the last three league matches having recently returned from injury.
But the Gunners have been urged to consider Brighton and Hove Albion’s Matty Ryan instead after the Australia stopper lost his place in the Seagulls side to Robert Sanchez.
TalkSPORT’s transfer expert Alex Crook said: “Arsenal let Emi Martinez go to Aston Villa at the start of the season and it doesn’t look the wisest of moves now.
“Alex Runarsson who came in to replace him as back-up to Bernd Leno just isn’t up to the job, and I think Mikel Arteta has realised that after his error-strewn performance against Man City in the Carabao Cup.
“They’re willing to let go out on loan, but of course they will need to bring in some kind of replacement.
“I know Mikel Arteta remains a fan of David Raya at Brentford, but I’ll be surprised if they let him go in this window – possibly that could happen in the summer.
“I wonder about Matty Ryan down at Brighton. He’s lost his place in the team and has been told he can leave if a club comes in for him.”
