8 Must-Watch Programming Movies for Coders
The movies listed below are chosen because of their exceptional storytelling and it won’t be completely wrong to say that all these movies were ahead of their time. After watching them you will realize how being a programmer can be life-changing.
1. The Social Network (2010)
The Social Network is a movie about the creation of the most popular social media platform, Facebook. It looks into the story of Mark Zuckerberg, how he and his friend, Eduardo Saverin, worked on this billion-dollar idea together. But with time Zuckerberg tends to make all the decisions himself which angers Saverin and stops the funding for the software building. Fast forward to the end, after some nasty professional fights, you will find these two, Zuckerberg and Saverin, in the lawcourts, claiming their share on Facebook.
It is a great movie that shows how difficult and tough the business market can be on you, especially if you have a money-making company. The Social Network is highly recommended for everyone who wants to go through the story of Facebook, that’s why it is one of the best programming movies.
2. The Imitation Game (2014)
The Imitation Game is based on a real-life cryptanalyst, Alan Turing. You can imagine him as an excellent programmer working as a government employee in Britain, who decoded the German messages during World War II. That, ladies and gentleman, was huge in the 1930s when no one could do it and he did. It is so amazing to look into a life of a man who is already under societal pressures of being gay and still fights a war, by sitting in a room. That’s the worst possible thing you can imagine for someone as smart as him.
Benedict Cumberbatch has truly done great justice to the man. His acting is phenomenal, the director and writer, have done a really good job in this movie. The Imitation Game is undoubtedly one of the best programming movies of all time that you must watch.
3. Tron (1982)
The third of our best programming movies is Tron, which was ahead of its time. In 1982 when most of the world didn’t even know about computers, Tron happened and it tried to depict screenplay in 3D. It might seem a little over the board & funny, but Come On! It was made in 1982. The story is about a hacker who somehow gets stuck in the computer world and interacts with the programs while trying to get out of there. Funny, Right? He does get out of there in the end but you would have to watch it yourself for knowing how.
It’s a nice movie, not necessarily the intense or deep one but you would not be bored while watching it.
4. The Matrix (1999)
The Matrix is one of the greatest movies of all time. There’s no question about it. Starring Keanu Reeves, The Matrix is a story of a computer hacker who meets a beautiful stranger. She leads him to an underworld scene where he comes to know about the whole lie that his life was. His whole life was nothing but an evil deception of cyber-intelligence.
This one of the best programming movies has inspired numerous people to become a programmer. It was and still is super cool. The whole concept of Matrix was just something never seen before and astonished many people.
5. The Fifth Estate (2013)
Ever heard of WikiLeaks?
The Fifth Estate is a must-watch if you are a programmer or want to be one soon. This movie, particularly shows the power programmers have had for a very long time. It is a very empowering movie for any aspiring coder.
The Fifth Estate is about the story of WikiLeaks, the website that shook the governments to the core. The movie showcases how this website was created for disclosing the deceptions and frauds that the governments of the world do to the public. The movie precisely shows the controversies, the intentions of the creator, their courage, and most importantly, their will to continue this work. There’s a line from the trailer I liked saying ‘you can’t change the world without crashing the system’, and that’s precisely the most accurate description of the movie. Making it number fifth on our list of best programming movies.
6. Hackers (1995)
Hackers movie has received the cult classic status from the people. The movie is about some high school hackers who get involved in a corporate extortion conspiracy. Now it is not just some classic movie, it has some deep dialogues about the future of the programming that one can see happening right now. Released in the mid-1900s the concept of the cyber community wasn’t understood by the people.
Starring Angelina Jolie, Hackers is definitely an underrated but worthy in coming to the list of best programming movies.
7. Source Code (2011)
What a perfect name!
Source Code is a mind-blowing programming movie. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the main lead. He is a caption in the movie who is inside a ‘source code’ program, where he can be put into anyone’s body.
Now the movie is on a serious note since the start, where the actor finds himself inside the body of a man, who’s on a train that is about to explode in exactly 8 minutes. He has to go through those 8 minutes and get exploded (in the source code) until he finds out who’s the bomber and stops him. The movie was a hit and got favorable comments from critics. If we are talking about the best programming movies, Source Code has to come into it.
8. Her (2013)
If you haven’t watched ‘Her’, you have watched nothing!!
Her is a magical movie for all the lovers of this world. It is about a man, his loneliness, and how he tries to overcome it. He builds an Operating System that can evolve, enhance its capabilities, and all there is a voice (The mesmerizing voice of Scarlett Johansson). There is an option for a male and female voice, and you already know which one is chosen. She talks to him, and it feels so real. I can’t imagine the last time any human talked to me that way. She becomes his girlfriend and you learn a lot about relationships, people, love especially.
This movie is a masterpiece. Don’t forget to hear the moon song on loops to know what love feels like!
Definitely worthy of being titles as one of the best programming movies ever.
