15 areas where Covid cases are rising – and three are in the North East

These are the 15 towns and cities in England which have seen a rise in coronavirus cases.

Since England was plunged into a third lockdown, the number of new infections has dramatically fallen.

However, latest figures show that there has been a small week-on-week rise in Covid-19 cases in some areas, the Mirror reports.

Corby in Northamptonshire has the highest infection rate in the country, with a rate of 512.3 cases per 100,000, up from 473.6.

Meanwhile, Sunderland has a rate of 322.3 cases per 100,000, up from 315.1 and Gateshead has seen cases increase from 383 to 415.

North Tyneside has also seen a slight rise in cases from 211.1 per 100,000 to 213.1.

The 15 areas where cases are increasing are:

  • Kettering
  • Corby
  • Sunderland
  • Lichfield
  • Boston
  • Rutland
  • Chorley
  • Doncaster
  • Eastleigh
  • North Tyneside
  • Gateshead
  • Torbay
  • East Lindsey
  • West Oxfordshire
  • North Lincolnshire

This week England’s chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, warned that the daily death figures would remain high “for some time”, but said new infections and hospital admissions were falling.

In the past seven days there have been 138,760 confirmed Covid cases in the UK – a 26.5% week-on-week drop.

“I think that most of my colleagues think we are past the peak,” Prof Whitty told a Downing Street briefing this week.

“Now that doesn’t mean you could never have another peak. But, at this point in time, provided people continue to follow the guidelines, we’re on the downward slope of cases, of hospitalisations and of deaths, in all four of the nations of the United Kingdom.

“So I think, we do think, at this point, this peak at least, we are past.”
